Henry Cohen

My name is Henry Cohen. I grew up in Washington, D.C., and moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains five years ago to pursue an education in Chinese medicine and martial arts. Through over a decade of exploration, I have Come to see human health not as a static state, but as a complex causal relationship with nature. The Chinese view of the body posits a microcosm-macrocosm relationship, with the internal movements of human physiology mirrored in the external movements of nature.
As a Doctor of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture with a four-year degree from Five Branches University, I have dedicated the past four years of my life to the rigorous scientific inquiry and ancient wisdom of the Chinese medical tradition.

My practice is deeply informed by my five years of training within the Wudang San Feng Pai lineage of Daoist martial art, which integrates the embodied movements of Qigong, Taiji, Kungfu, and meditation into a holistic system for human wellbeing. Steeping myself in this tradition has allowed me to learn the Chinese medical system “from the inside out” in addition to the extensive regime of studying required for proficiency in the field. I almost always include lifestyle and movement therapy in advising my patients, which empowers them to take matters into their own hands.

I also have a background in cooking, which was my first passion as a child, and continues to be a centerpiece of my life to this day. Studying the cooking tradition within Chinese medicine has transformed my view on food from a means to enjoyment to a fundamental building block of physiological flourishing. Chinese medicine identifies food as the “superior medicine”, implying that the first line of defense in treating patients is to treat with food first. Similarly with my martial arts practice, I use cooking to put my patients in the drivers seat with their own health.
